E stands for Edge Stitch.  The Edge Stitch is made at the beginning of the row by knitting into the back of the first stitch and at the end of the row by bringing the yarn forward (if it is not already there) and slipping the last stitch purlwise.

FT118 - Hugs and Kisses Scarf
Line 1 of the pattern:  when you get to the end of the pattern you will have 2 extra stitches.  Please omit the last k1, p1b and the pattern will be set correctly.
